For my grandchild on Valentines day

When saw you the first time, I was moved beyond Words.
My breath caught in my chest,
My heart skipped,
And you opened your eyes.

When I saw you a second time, I shouted for Joy.
I could not contain my breath,
My heart leapt,
And you smiled at your achievement.

When I saw you a third time, I laughed out Loud.
My breath was a gasp,
My heart racing,
And you repeated your performance just for me.

When I saw you a fourth time, I was Amazed,
My breath was swept away,
My heart stopped,
As you transformed into the person I fell in love with so many years before.

When the world saw you, I helped you to Go.
My breath caught in my chest,
My heart skipped,
As you opened your wings.

Watching my grandchildren grow is a blessed opportunity for me. I have jokingly called my twelve-year-old grandson my fifth child.  As he continues to see the world and mature, I am so grateful to be able to have had so much time with him, and now that my granddaughters are growing up as well, I am doubly blessed to spend days watching them twirl in tutus and crowns, put on rock star concerts, and accomplish everything from drawing the perfect Rainbow to perfecting their backfloat.

Today, as you celebrate the love you have for your husband, boyfriend, friends, children, and grandchildren, I hope you get a moment to hug, kiss, and express your love everyone who is important to you.

Love Curtain

The night before Valentine’s Day,  wait until the grandkids are asleep, then tape ribbons with hearts on them from the top of their bedroom door frames.  If you grandchildren do not live with you, you can have this set up at the front door for them to walk through when they arrive.  Some hearts can smiley faces or stickers on them, but  favorites will always have reminders of your affection.  ‘We love you’, pet names, meaningful inside jokes, coupons for hugs and kisses can be hidden in the heart messages… the grandkids will love walking through them for more than just this one day.

For a twist, help them make heart curtains to hang at their houses for their parents!

Colored paper

  • Tape

  1. Cut heart shapes out of the colored paper, some a bit smaller than others. If you are not comfortable just cutting, you can pre-buy doilies in different sizes or use a cookie cutter as a template.
  2. Tape the smaller and larger hearts together, as shown, and write your Valentine message on them.
  3. Tape the hearts onto a few lengths of cut ribbon and tape (or tack) the ribbons, like a curtain, onto your child’s bedroom door frame.

Wear your Heart on Your Sleeve

I have seven fashion models in my house – all who demand special outfits for special occasions, and as an indulgent but frugal grandmother, I of course want to find an inexpensive way to make their outfits unique.

For someone who wants to wear her heart on her sleeve on Valentine’s Day, we borrowed this simple suggestion from Martha Stuart at almost no cost (felt is only $.35 at the craft store). No Sewing needed!

1. Cut hearts from pink or red felt proportional to the size of the shirt’s buttons.

2. Fold each in half horizontally, and cut a vertical slit, or buttonhole, about the same size as the button.

3. To wear, button up shirt, and then slip hearts over buttons.

Valentine’s Day Hugs

These Paper Hugs, created with your grandchild’s handprints, are a whimsical way for your grandchild to get creative by giving hugs to all of his favorite people, even the ones who live far away.  A teacher in Utah suggested this idea, and I just think this project is sure to become a keepsake that is proudly displayed for many Valentine’ Day to come

  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Colored markers (plus stickers, paint, or crayons, if you like)
  • Ribbon

  1. Trace your right hand on the right end of the paper and your left hand on the left end. Draw 2 horizontal lines to connect the hand outlines and form one long “arm.”
  2. Cut out the hug and decorate it using markers, stickers, paints, or crayons. You can help the youngest ones write a clever message… ‘I Love You THIS Much.’  If you do help your grandchild write something, let them have the chance to add their own special touch by signing their name, writing their own sentence or drawing a picture.
  3. Then roll up the hug, tie it with a ribbon, and have your grandchild give it to their valentine.

Valentines Day Pencil Toppers

These pencil – topping conversation starting hearts will let your grandchild get right to the point of her Valentine’s messages.

  • Scissors
  • Craft foam or Construction Paper
  • Permanent markers

  1. Cut a 1- to 2-inch heart from craft foam or Construction Paper. With a marker, print a short message on the front and the name of the giver on back.
  2. Now poke an inch of the pipe cleaner through the bottom of the heart, bend it down, and twist it back around the remaining length of pipe cleaner.
  3. Coil the pipe cleaner tightly around the pencil. Then gently pull up on the heart so that part of the coil bobs freely above the pencil, with several loops anchored around the eraser end.

Heart and Lolipop Flower Valentines

Colorful hearts flourish as the petals of a new flower variety –one with a lollipop center and stem.

1. Use Construction Paper  to make a half-heart template about 3 inches high and 1 1/4 inches wide. Fold a 12-by-3 1/2-inch piece of construction paper in half vertically, and trace four half-hearts along the fold.

2. Cut out hearts; unfold.

3. Stack hearts; punch a hole 1/4 inch up from bottom. Position petals to form a flower, making sure holes line up. Secure by applying glue around holes; let dry. Write name on a petal. Insert lollipop.

Valentines Day Treats

Valentine’s Day just would not be complete without a special meal or treat for your Grandkids.  But how can you do this without breaking the bank?  We have some suggestions for using your everyday meals… but putting a heart felt-twist on them to make sure your grandkids LOVE them!

Heartwarming Mini Pizzas!

Use fresh dough shaped into a heart, or take bagel thins and a cookie cutter to make heart-shaped bagels.  Let the kids add sauce, shredded cheese, and bake!

English Muffin Hearts

Using a cookie butter, stamp out a heart shape of the English muffin.  Topped with butter and jelly, they make the perfect breakfast or after school snack.

Lemon Love Potion

Pink lemonade, a scoop of raspberry sherbet, and lemon lime soda mix to make a love potion nobody can resist.  Serve in a glass with straws to really impress your sweetheart.

Heartfelt Pancakes

Using your own pancake recipe, shape your breakfast cakes into hearts on the griddle.  A warm way to start this special day and let your grandchildren know you love them.

Make-Your-Own Valentines Day Cards

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, many of you may have been sent home a classroom list of names for your grandchild to gift Valentines to.  Or you may want to take advantage of the upcoming holiday to surprise your children with special homemade valentines from your grandchildren.

This is the perfect time to make your own Valentine’s Day Cards!

1. Use the Computer to Guide your Card

Custom design your own cards at a website like Making-Greeting-Cards.com or Microsoft Office Online. Some of these sites offer templates that you can download.

Use online tools to personalize and decorate the card, including photos from your library, images from the Internet and other custom-publishing tools. Microsoft Office Online, for example, provides color and font schemes and clip art online.

Print the card on your home printer. Embellish the card, if you desire, with supplies you find around your house, like ribbon, buttons, colored paper or magazine clippings.

2. Start from Scratch with your Own Craft

Using construction paper and colored pens or paint, you can design beautiful hand crafted valentines sure to ensnare any sweetie! A couple examples:

You can use doilies with the center cut out over a heart-shaped cut out piece of construction paper, just place your grandchild’s picture in the middle, and Voila! Instant Keepsake!

You can cut out two semi-heart butterfly wings from any color construction paper, and tape a sucker in the center for the body.  Let your grandchildren decorate the wings.

3. Make Valentine’s Day Bookmarks

Use a popsicle stick, a big paperclip, felt, or construction paper for the body.  Pink, Red or Purple construction paper (or your grandchild’s favorite color, there are no rules to follow!)

Cut out heart shapes, use, heart shaped stickers, draw hearts, on the book mark.

End with a cute message, signed by your grandchild

If you want to make the bookmark sturdier, you can always laminate the paper areas, but that can be pricey!  I have used good old scotch tape strips to “waterproof” construction paper, it works just as well, and you probably have some leftover from Christmas!
