Make-Your-Own Valentines Day Cards

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, many of you may have been sent home a classroom list of names for your grandchild to gift Valentines to.  Or you may want to take advantage of the upcoming holiday to surprise your children with special homemade valentines from your grandchildren.

This is the perfect time to make your own Valentine’s Day Cards!

1. Use the Computer to Guide your Card

Custom design your own cards at a website like Making-Greeting-Cards.com or Microsoft Office Online. Some of these sites offer templates that you can download.

Use online tools to personalize and decorate the card, including photos from your library, images from the Internet and other custom-publishing tools. Microsoft Office Online, for example, provides color and font schemes and clip art online.

Print the card on your home printer. Embellish the card, if you desire, with supplies you find around your house, like ribbon, buttons, colored paper or magazine clippings.

2. Start from Scratch with your Own Craft

Using construction paper and colored pens or paint, you can design beautiful hand crafted valentines sure to ensnare any sweetie! A couple examples:

You can use doilies with the center cut out over a heart-shaped cut out piece of construction paper, just place your grandchild’s picture in the middle, and Voila! Instant Keepsake!

You can cut out two semi-heart butterfly wings from any color construction paper, and tape a sucker in the center for the body.  Let your grandchildren decorate the wings.

3. Make Valentine’s Day Bookmarks

Use a popsicle stick, a big paperclip, felt, or construction paper for the body.  Pink, Red or Purple construction paper (or your grandchild’s favorite color, there are no rules to follow!)

Cut out heart shapes, use, heart shaped stickers, draw hearts, on the book mark.

End with a cute message, signed by your grandchild

If you want to make the bookmark sturdier, you can always laminate the paper areas, but that can be pricey!  I have used good old scotch tape strips to “waterproof” construction paper, it works just as well, and you probably have some leftover from Christmas!
